Schools and companies buy laptops and iPads. Later, they upgrade or just don’t want them any more and they get thrown away. How can we get that technology into the hands of community members who can use them?

Capitalism is an economic system in which a small group of people at the top of a financial hierarchy exploit others at lower levels according to the principle: buy low sell high. This small group uses profits to buy land and also control labor rates and conditions; food, water, transportation and processes others must buy, rent or use in order to participate in organized society ā thereby setting in motion a self-perpetuating system of automatic wealth acquisition. As long as society functions, those holdings will be used and the holders of them will acquire greater wealth, which will translate into more acquisition in a never ending loop.

It discusses the racist motivation of the misnamed “education reform” movement; the injustice that investor-based charters represent ā institutions which are publicly funded but privately controlled; and is a must-read for any person interested in education equity.
Dr. Mike Evans is a preventive medicine researcher. He found the single biggest and important health investment you can make is: be active between 20 and 30 minutes a day. Evans says, walking is a great way to get it done so take the dog out, get off your bus a stop early, get out with some friends or #walkwithmike. But you can also ride a bike (stationary or mobile), do yoga, Pilates, garden or take an aerobics class. The important thing, is just move!

These women jump-ropers from Hungary make it look easy to heft a soccer ball while jump-roping. Truth is, I went to school with a bunch of girls who were probably many times more skilled than these ladies, but my schoolmates didn’t come up with the idea of jump-roping and butt-rope-jumping all over Rio during World Cup season like they did.
By the way, I boycotted the World Cup to protest the Brazilian government’s “sanitization program” which removed entire communities of poor people and ordered the killing of over 120 street orphans to make the World Cup area nice for tourists.
I boycotted the World Cup for the the same reasons young Brazilian Carla Dauden explains in her 6 minute video. Carla begins, “No, I’m not going to the World Cup and this is why ā¦” She tells why the World Cup is good for the rich and for FIFA, but terrible and even terrifying for the average citizens of Brazil. Included are 90 seconds of clips showing conditions of oppression and tremendous need in a country that spent billions on the World Cup but refuses to invest in hospitals or medical care and that recently hiked public transit fares up so high people couldn’t afford to go to work.
I learned today that Facebook is under an FCC consent decree that will last 20 years (until 2032) to protect user’s privacy. Also that privacy advocacy group EPIC has filed a formal complaint against Facebook for violating it. Facebook recently attempted to influence the mood of 700,000 users by filtering posts in their News Feeds to show either more good or more bad news, and then monitored individual users’ posts for words known to reflect emotional state. This was a research project that involved Cornell University but users were not informed that it was taking place.
