An evening with Cornel West and POP in Newark

The People’s Organization for Progress and the Bethany Baptist Church Board of Deacons presents a special Black History Month event: An Evening with Cornel West!

This special event will take place at Bethany Baptist Church, 275 West Market Street, Newark on Wednesday, April 2 at 6:30pm (rescheduled due to ice storm).

Cornel WestDr. West will discuss ‘The Importance of Organization Building in the Struggle for Racial, Social and Economic Justice.’

Cornel West has written 19 books, including his best seller Democracy Matters. He appears regularly on the Bill Maher Show, The Colbert Report, CNN and CSpan. He can be heard on a weekly basis on the popular public radio show, Smiley and West, co-hosted by the critically acclaimed Tavis Smiley. The show airs locally on WBGO-FM/Jazz 88 (88.3FM) on Saturday mornings at 6am.

He has also done numerous spoken word projects with artists such as Jill Scott, Talib Kweli, Krs One and others, all demonstrating his willing to reach a variety of audiences with his passion for justice, truth-telling and bridge building in the tradition of the immortal Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In October 2011, in solidarity with the growing Occupy Movement and in an impassioned call for economic justice, Dr. West and 18 others, voluntarily faced arrest at the U.S. Supreme Court to protest public policy protecting corporate greed! See link below…Just days later, he would also face arrest in New York City protesting the city’s racist ‘Stop and Frisk’ program.

Interestingly, at the time of West’s civil disobedience, the People’s Organization for Progress was engaged in a historic 381 day protest for economic justice in honor of the Montgomery Bus Boycott and to dramatize the current economic crisis!

“We are pleased and humbled to have Cornel West with us, and we anxiously await what actions will be initiated inspired by this gathering,” said a tireless Lawrence Hamm, the founding chairman of the People’s Organization for Progress.

  1. @Wattree, thanks for the history lesson. I appreciate the logic that one must not take anything for granted and that questioning authority has value. But, I have also seen examples of ultra-liberals causing damage to the liberal camp, like the ones you share.

I had no idea that Cornel West and Smiley took on Walmart as a major sponsor. Can you point me to any proof of this?

  2. Cornel West is a Phony
    .
Cornel West is the quintessential phony, and one of the primary reasons the country is in the fix that it’s in. The Black community wasn’t doing great, but a lot better than it is today under Clinton. Then during the 2000 election Ralph Nader and Cornel West teamed up and got Bush elected.
    .
Clinton’s vice President, Al Gore, lost the 2000 election to Bush in Florida by 537 votes, and the Nader/West coalition peeled off 97,488 votes from Gore in Florida alone. So, again, West is one of the big reasons that the Black community is in the shape that it’s in today. Under Bush, the country was hemorrhaging 850,000 jobs a month. So by criticizing Obama about the condition of the country, Cornel West is like a guy who walks into a restaurant and craps on the floor, and then calls the Health Department because the owner doesn’t get it up fast enough. (http://www.uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/state.php?year=2000&fips=12).
    .
West then tried to team up with Ralph Nader again to undermine Obama and help the GOP in the Last election in 2012, but this time no one was bought into it. (http://madamenoire.com/111209/once-again-nader-and-west-team-to-elect-a-republican-president/). According to a Washington Post article entitled, Liberals seeking primary challengers to Obama, “The group said Saturday it is seeking six ‘recognizable, articulate’ candidates who would not mount serious challenges to Obama, but ‘rigorously debate his policy stands’ on issues related to labor, poverty, foreign policy, civil rights and consumer protections.” Who did they think they were kidding? They were out to cause the very same kind of dissension among Democrats that lost them the election to Bush in 2000.
    .
Clear evidence that West had absolutely no concern about either poverty, or the working class is, in spite of Tavis Smiley and Cornel West traveling all across the country on a bus under the pretext of being so passionately concerned about poverty in America that they just HAD to take a stand – but of course, that was BEFORE the election, and when they had books to sell. But after the election was over, and they didn’t have any new books to sell, they couldn’t bring themselves to walk down the street from Tavis’ office to support the Black Friday demonstrations taking place all across the country against Wal-Mart – Tavis’ major sponsor, a member of ALEC, and the biggest abuser of the working class in America today.
    .
And not only did they fail to attend ANY of the demonstrations taking place across the country against Wal-Mart, they didn’t even issue a comment of support. All we’ve heard coming from the Smiley/West camp are crickets – and as everyone knows, that’s extremely uncharacteristic of Cornel West, who’s renown for being willing to trade a kidney for a sound byte. Thus, that just about says it all about those two. All subjective assessments aside, the facts alone suggest that Tavis Smiley and Cornel West are two of the most blatantly self-serving hypocrites that the Black community has ever suffered.
    .
And finally, just to show you how transparent their game is, we PREDICTED that Tavis and West weren’t going to show up at the demonstrations against Wal-Mart.

    1. Thanks gerty1122! I check it out and you’re right. The show used to air on WBGO but currently airs on WCWP. I edited the post to reflect the change.
