{"id":276,"date":"2009-07-09T02:08:11","date_gmt":"2009-07-09T06:08:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kim.thewei.com\/?p=276"},"modified":"2013-12-13T08:11:40","modified_gmt":"2013-12-13T13:11:40","slug":"the-philly-60","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thewei.com\/kimi\/the-philly-60\/","title":{"rendered":"The Philly 60"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When 60 Black kids from The Creative Steps Day Camp in North Philly got in the pool at The Valley Swim Club in Philadelphia<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8221; . . . all of the Caucasian children immediately exited the pool,&#8221; Horace Gibson, parent of a day camp child, wrote in an email. &#8220;The pool attendants came and told the black children that they did not allow minorities in the club and needed the children to leave immediately.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The next day the club told the camp director that the camp&#8217;s membership was being suspended and their money would be refunded. <\/p>\n<p>The explanation they got was either dishearteningly honest or poorly worded. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion \u2026 and the atmosphere of the club,&#8221; John Duesler, President of The Valley Swim Club said in a statement.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One camper heard a member say &#8220;Uh, what are all these black kids doing here?&#8217; . . .  &#8216;I&#8217;m scared they might do something to my child.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/JessieNYC \">Jessie Daniels<\/a> posts on <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/kimiwei\">Twitter<\/a>: Want to tell Philly pool bigots how you feel? e: info@thevalleyclub.com\/ Tel:215-947-0700<\/p>\n<p>Full article at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/news\/local\/Pool-Boots-Kids-Who-Might-Change-the-Complexion.html\">NBC Philadelphia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another recent example of racial prejudice being alive, well and publicly acceptable in America today is the case of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bc4hkids.com\/projects\/jena6.html\">Jena 6<\/a> who were heavily persecuted by some town administrators, townspeople and schoolmates in Jena, Louisiana following a hate incident in 2006.
