It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s called <a href=\"http:\/\/content.nejm.org\/cgi\/reprint\/357\/6\/529.pdf\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Terra Firma \u00e2\u20ac\u201d A Journey from Migrant Farm Labor to Neurosurgery,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/a> by Alfredo Qui\u00c3\u00b1ones-Hinojosa, who is the director of the brain-tumor stem-cell laboratory at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He came to the U.S. illegally from Mexico in the mid-1980\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s, as a teenage migrant worker who didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t speak English. Through a long series of hard jobs, accidents, inspiration, and mentorship, he wound up attending Berkeley and then Harvard Medical School.
