A tale of three travesties of justice and two unfortunate outcomes

This is a series of those completely messed up stories that seem like they can only happen in America. It starts with Marvin Louis Guy. He and his wife became aware that armed intruders were entering their Kileen, Texas home. As they were gun owners, the Guys took the logical step of shooting these dangerous men, killing one of them. But ooops, it turned out that the intruders were police staging a “no-knock” raid on the Guy’s home – where by the way no drugs or any thing illegal, was found.

Guy’s attorneys asked for his trial to be postponed until early 2016 to give them time to build his defense.

Let’s shift the focus to another Texas no-knock drug raid during which another man killed a police officer. Same story, just different – because this killer is white. Capital murder charges against Henry Goedrich Magee were dropped. It’s interesting to consider the difference between the photograph of Magee that was circulated to the media and the public portraying him as a loving father, compared to the mug-shot-looking photo authorities have circulated of Marvin Louis Guy.

Last – but certainly not least, there’s the case of 19 year old Quintonio LaGrier. In my mind, his story is linked to the first two in the sense that it involves a police officer exhibiting extremely poor judgment – but here, the fatally shot victims were Mr. LaGrier and his 55 year old neighbor. What makes this story so exceptionally special, though, is what Officer Rialmo has done since killing the young man: he has filed suit against the teen’s family, demanding damages in the amount of $10 million for “extreme emotional trauma”.

Mitch Smith of the New York Times interviewed Basileios J. Foutris, a lawyer for Mr. LeGrier’s estate, who said:

It’s a new low for the Chicago Police Department. First you shoot them, then you sue them. It’s outrageous. I can’t believe that this police officer has the temerity to turn around and sue the estate of the person who he killed.

Mr. LaGrier’s family covered the cost of laying him to rest with generous donations received through a GoFundMe campaign set up by a family friend.

It’s a terrible thing when the peace officers sworn to protect us, attack us instead. This is harming families, wreaking havoc on our society and it needs to stop.
