The guy trying to get the girl’s number – is a girl!

If you’re like 23 million other people plus my sons and I, you will love this humourous video clip. In it, Darrel (pronunciation stress on the “el”) tries to get a girl in the movie theater to give him her number. But Darrel is actually a comedy character portrayed by a girl named Nicole Randall Johnson. Nicole as Darrell is a very annoying guy who just won’t take no for an answer. “Work that updo, girl!” he tells his would-be romance. But she’s not having any of it, or him. Darrell’s persuasive antics are just fun. read more

Kimi’s disappearing coffee cup

Oh, this is a riot. Look what happened to me: the other day I got a waitress at the Golden Grill all confused. I interrupted a very intense conversation with my breakfast mates about ways to get more Latinos and Blacks involved in Englewood Public library activities, to point out to the waitress that I still wanted more coffee, but someone had already removed my cup. It wasn’t sitting on the table near my right hand, where I had last seen it.

“Why is this lady looking at me so strange,” I wondered to myself. And she was motionless, just standing there with the coffee pot in her right hand, kind of frozen almost. She asked me a couple of time what I meant, and then I wasn’t sure what to do. Suddenly I became afraid that maybe she was having a stroke and had lost her power of comprehension. Finally, the waitress pointed at the coffee cup sitting right in front of me – the one practically touching the front of my shirt – and she asked me gently, “Could you be talking about that coffee cup, maybe?” read more

Swing and more at CMDE studio in Hackensack

My favorite Bergen County dance studio offers all kinds of fantastic dance classes for teens and adults (my own family’s make up) and is now offering a swing workshop. Looks fun! Swing is a one-time workshop but my boys and I have taken CMDE’s (free) family Latin dance classes and love them and I took African dance, another completely free class, alone.

Woman jailed for noisy sex – what about husband?

This is a bit odd to me. An English woman’s been fined, and now jailed, for noisy sex which included the bed banging into the wall. I can understand why her neighbors don’t want to hear the lady screaming and moaning and having the bed banging when she and her husband get into it.

But what about husband Steve? Why isn’t he being held responsible for any of this?

Live fusion of music, dance and painting all performed at once

Our friend Steve Cohn is an avant garde jazz artist who does really brilliant, leading edge work, sometimes right here in the New York City region. In 2007 he was in Amsterdam for a fusion performance called Mo(ve)ment Meets Musicians. My son and I just watched a video clip of the performance and love what we saw.

While Steve played Piano and Shakuhachi and Ernst Resijseger played Cello (sometimes holding it like a guitar), Benno Hübner danced. And on the wall behind them a super-large screen projects the work of two painters who are live on the scene painting while the performance takes place (Tali Farchi and Royce Deans). read more

    I love Syrian jokes

I love Syrian jokes and just found a whole website full of them!

    Here’s a sample:

Someone told his Homsi friend your wife and your best friend are in the forest together…
The Homsi runs to the forest and after 5 minutes he cames back and says: there is only 2 trees and you say forest !!

Flunked school but sold his art for 20 million

Willard creates sculptures under a microscope that can fit inside of the head of a pin. His Charlie Chaplin balances perfectly on the end of a eyelash.

But the man can’t read or write! “My teacher made me feel small,” he reports in a YouTube video. “She made me feel like I was nothing. I’m trying to prove that nothing, doesn’t exist,” he says.

Willard’s teacher should rethink the value she places on students with learning disabilities like those Willard suffers from. A collector just bought up Willard’s private stock of his sculptures for USD $20 million. Hah! Good on you, Mr. Willard. read more

    Free museum admissions?

I was looking for a list of free admissions hours to museums in the city. I found out that some museums are always free, some allow people to pay “whatever they wish to pay” [which can be a one penny donation] and some are free on certain days, or during certain hours.

In a New York Times article, Roberta Smith intended to propose a challenge to museums to gradually lower their fees until they were always open to the public at no charge. “. . . it is through [artwork] that we discover and explore important aspects of our humanness. [Museums] should be equally available to all, for the good of the individual and society as a whole.” read more
