Donations of blankets, sleeping bags, pillows
Acquiring adequate bedding is one of our biggest challenges. We assign one blanket or sleeping bag to each client, which will be theirs for the entire winter. If you have a spare or old blanket or sleeping bag (adult sizes only), please consider donating it to us. You can drop off in Fair Lawn (Bergen County) or Newark (Essex County):
Fair Lawn NJ
34-06 Rosalie Street, Fair Lawn NJ
(Please pack items in a waterproof bag (like a garbage bag) and put on front porch if nobody answers the doorbell.)
The HUBB
Newark NJ
135 Prince Street – Basement Level, Newark NJ
(Please put items in a bag and leave towards the rear of the hallway if nobody answers door.)
About the Grassroots Warming Station
Service
The Grassroots Warming Station opens to our neighbors with no address when night time temperatures drop to around 25º. Our Warming Station’s location may change from time to time but our service commitment remains the same: to provide safe, warm, supervised shelter and hot meals between the hours of 8:00pm and 8:00am, to those without a home of their own. Our sleeping space is donated; all of our direct services are provided by volunteers; and community donations of items and a small amount of funds provide us with cooking and cleaning supplies; and food.
The Essex County government supports us with transporting clients to our Warming Station and we also bring in specialists to help clients apply for services that may help them transition into permanent housing, obtain medical care and increase their food security.
Location
Our Winter 2015 Warming Station is located at The HUBB, 135 Prince Street – basement level, Newark, NJ.
